FEATURED ARTIST: IAN JEWETT (THE GRINCH)

This series is a compilation of portraits of people who inspire me as a teacher. All pieces are spray paint on wood. Some of the wood is found wood and some is purchased. If possible, I like to include words from these artists and revolutionaries.

I have been a 4th and 5th grade public school teacher for 10 years in Los Angeles.  Early in my teaching career I discovered that art can help struggling students.  I began using art and Chinese calligraphy to teach kids math.

I recently began stenciling with students to explore the idea of art as a source of protest, a driving force for change, and as a form of self expression. During the 5th grade study of the Revolutionary War, students created stenciled portraits of the Revolutionary War leaders with inspiring words.

I believe that art is here to enjoy, inspire, to laugh at, to reflect upon and to encourage change.  I also believe no one has a monopoly on this, we can all participate.
